This article explores this emotional labour experienced by people with lived experience and research managers in the context of mental health research. The following themes were identified: describing the negotiation of identity, the emotional work of using and embodying lived experience, and aspects of the working environment. The authors detail the complex nature of identity and alienation experienced by people with lived experience within the workplace.
