“Utterly Overwhelming”—A Mixed-Methods Exploration of Sensory Processing Differences and Mental Health Experiences in Middle-Aged and Older Autistic Adults
Y Chen et al, 2024
This study explores how sensory processing differences (SPDs) and mental health conditions impact middle-aged and older autistic adults. The findings show that, compared to non-autistic participants, autistic individuals experience more SPDs, greater difficulty coping with sensory stimuli, and a higher co-occurrence of sensory and mental health challenges, particularly as they age. These results underscore the need for tailored support and interventions to help older autistic people manage their sensory environments and mental health.
