Research on Post-Diagnostic Support for Autistic Young People
Redmayne, Davies, Allain, Carter, Healy, Islaam, Portway, Thomspon, Cooper, Mandy and Crane (2023)
Limited understanding of their diagnosis can negatively impact the mental health of autistic young people, especially during the transition to adulthood. Post-diagnosis support is often inconsistent, with many autistic individuals—particularly from marginalised communities—facing significant barriers to access. In response, Ambitious about Autism co-designed an online peer support course with autistic young people, called Understand You, Discover You, which helps participants explore autism and build a positive autistic identity while learning mental health coping strategies. This report gathers evidence on the link between autistic identity and wellbeing, examines inequalities in accessing support, and evaluates the co-production process and pilot of the course to guide its ongoing development and improve inclusivity.
