Do No Harm: Can School Mental Health Interventions Cause Iatrogenic Harm?

£0.00

Foulkes and Stringaris (2023)

This article addresses the extensive efforts in secondary education to prevent, treat and raise awareness of adolescent mental health problems. For some, support and treatment are essential and will lead to a reduction in clinical symptoms. For others the current approaches may lead to iatrogenic (illness caused by medical examination or treatment) harm. This work looks at the growing body of quantitative work that suggests some aspects of school-based mental health interventions increase distress or clinical symptoms. Furthermore, the authors explore qualitative work which indicates that this increase in distress and clinical symptoms may be partly due to the interventions themselves.
