Portrayals of Autism in the British Press: A Corpus-Based Study

£0.00

Karaminis, Gabrielatos, Maden-Weinberger and Beattie (2022)

This study examined how British newspapers portrayed autism from 2011 to 2020, finding that coverage increased over time, especially in broadsheets and left-leaning outlets. However, most articles focused on negative aspects of autism, often emphasising challenges and portraying autistic individuals, mainly boys, as problems, potentially reinforcing stereotypes and hindering societal acceptance. Some recent shifts toward more inclusive representations were noted, but these were limited and not widespread across all media.
