Autistic SPACE: A Novel Framework for Meeting the Needs of Autistic People in Healthcare Settings

£0.00

Doherty, McCowan and Shaw (2023)

Autistic people risk barriers to accessing healthcare, which can lead to health outcome disparities and lower life expectancy. Healthcare professionals many have different knowledge about Autism and accessing medical environments may be difficult for Autistic people – leading to lack of support for medical issues. The authors have created a framework to facilitate equitable clinical services across all points of care. The framework is called SPACE and addresses five core needs: Sensory needs, predictability, acceptance, communication and empathy. The authors also include three additional aspects which are physical space, processing space and emotional space.
