Moseley, Druce and Turner-Cobb (2020)

Menopause is a major transition, but little has been written on Autistic people’s experience. This article uses a qualitative interview methodology to address awareness and perception of the menopause, experiences and the impact of the menopause, ways it may differ between Autistic and non-Autistic people and what good support might be. 17 Autistic people were interviewed, and four main themes were outlined. These themes were: The long journey to recognising Autism in adulthood; Menopause awareness and perception; Symptoms and their impact; Ways Neurodivergent menopause might differ from the norm. The findings from this study showed menopause to have the potential to compromise health and well-being of Autistic people and raises this as an underserved area for support.
